The streets of the east side are empty
all the home boys are retired
hung up their penaltants

and are naked sleeping

their dreams are restless and violent
the colors are midnight blue '57's
pearlescent white impalas

an occasional riviera
black with shining chrome
blue and red bandanas tied

around foreheads through hair
awnings over tightened
eyebrows

they reach through city stripped
barbed wire trying the crowbar
hoping this time the lock will break

on the other side of the night

the rival gang sings a rap song
about the death of their enemies
about the walls boasting names like

el gato

named for the cool way struts
and for the green that lights
his eyes before the fight

loco

named that for his crazy laughter
and his value for the lives of others
and the one they call

puppet
for his parlay skills.

the street of the east side are empty
and the home boys dream
about the aftermath of a battle

red bloody hands turn into a circle
weaving lines inside it
forming red red roses

from their mothers gardens
as they watch themselves as children
playing on the grass

playing with their enemies
